Vogue Africa? Africa Does Not Need Vogue to Validate it!

If I have to read or hear one more person or group call for a VOGUE Africa, I will scream! I am irritated and annoyed with the seemingly inferiority complex that seems so innate among many Africans. Read my writing: Africa DOES NOT NEED A VOGUE AFRICA! Even VOGUE knows this.

Paris based Cameroonian Photograper Mario Epanya created brilliant covers of a fictional VOGUE Africa. On April 21st, 2010 popular fashion blogger Claire of the Fashion Bomb posted Epanya’s images and referenced blogger Racialicious’s 2008 initial Coverage and question whether “ [T]here Ever Be A Vogue Africa?” Claire also referenced a VOGUE Africa Group also started about the same time by Africans.

Latin Grammy Nominee Choc Quib Town, South African Artist Wax on Covers of LADYBRILLE Magazine May 2010 Music Edition.

Africa is, of late, in vogue. The Fela! Musical on Broadway has been nominated for 11 Tony Awards; while world musicians flock to South Africa for the World Cup.

Ladybrille Magazine, however, continues its style of always keeping Africa in Vogue with its May 2010 Music issue.

The magazine founded in 2007 to de-stigmatize the negative images of Africans by exposing its youthful, urban and explosive creative industries to the Western masses, celebrates Africa’s music and musicians with Choc Quib Town (CQT) and Wax in its 2 in 1 May Covers.

Wax, a South African and Cameroon based artist and producer, is also the Magazine’s ‘Man of the Month.’

“The ‘Man of the Month’ is a monthly feature which recognizes outstanding men, locally and internationally, for their brilliant contributions to society,” explains Uduak Oduok, Editor-in-Chief of Ladybrille Magazine.

Wax is honored for his use of music to inspire African youths and raise awareness on social issues.

Nominated ‘Best New Artist’ at the 2009 Latin Grammy Awards, Colombia’s CQT gets the “Choc” in their name from the city of Chocó, one of the poorest cities in Latin America located in the Pacific Coast of Colombia. The city, where the 3 band members are from, also has the largest community of Africans in the country, many of whom are descendants of African slaves. CQT is using its brand of funky Afro-Colombian rhythms to put Chocó on the world map.

The Music Edition also features owners of Africa’s most popular music sites online: Demola Ogundele (Notjusok.com), Peter Kingoya (UGPulse.com) and the brilliant 5 at museke.com; all of whom provide a list of Africa’s hottest musicians to listen to in 2010.

The MAY 2010 ISSUE IS OUT NOW AND CAN BE PURCHASED at ladybrillemag.com
